VIDEO ATTACHMENTS DISTRIBUTED TO CITY COUNCIL THROUGH EMAIL FROM CITY
SECRETARY ON OCTOBER 2, 2015
Dear Lome,
Would you please forward this short video to the mayor and the city council members?
When we attended the zoning meeting about whether Camp Bow Wow should be allowed in the 280
Sports children's activity building, the Camp Bow Wow folks assured us that we would not see dog
waste outside their facility from their dogs.
They claimed that their dog owners demonstrated above average responsibility and would always pick
up after their dogs. They also assure us that the CBW staff regularly picked up inside and outside their
facility.
I visited the Camp Bow Wow in Coppell and videotaped dog waste in the parking area, just about 20
feet from their front door. It was obvious that this feces was quite a few days old.
In conclusion, I do not believe that the staff and the dog owners attending Camp Bow Wow will
conscientiously keep dog waste picked up outside their facility. Because of the real possibility of
bacteria from dog feces, such as ecoli and cryptosprodium contaminating the Emler swimming pool, I
ask the mayor and the city council not to approve the zoning change that will allow Camp Bow Wow to
share the 280 Sports building with children's activities.

Could you please forward this to the mayor and City Council members?
When we attended the zoning meeting about whether Camp Bow Wow should be allowed in the 280
Sports children's activity building, the Camp Bow Wow folks assured us we would not be bothered by
barking, because they don't allow their dogs to bark.
I didn't know how they could keep 85 dogs from barking so I visited the Camp Bow Wow in Coppell to
videotape what their dogs sounded like from outside their facility.
In conclusion, I believe the tenants, customers and children attending 280 Sports would be bothered
by the non-stop barking of Camp Bow Wow dogs.

Lome, Pd like to retract my opposition to Camp Bow Wow. I've met the owners and I feel confident they will be a
welcome addition to Southlake and a good neighbor.

Subject: Zoning change for Camp Bow Wow in a children's facility
October 1, 2015
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
Emler Swim School is protesting the change in zoning that would allow up to 85 dogs to
share the same building and parking area as hundreds of young children.
It may seem remote to people outside the swim industry that dog feces bacteria could
contaminate our water at Emler Swim School, but the large number of dogs and young
children in a limited area greatly increase our chances of cross contamination.
Camp Bow Wow assured us at the zoning meeting that their customers are above
average and would immediately pick up dog feces in common areas. They also stated
that any accidental dog waste in or around their facility would be cleaned up by CBW
staff. The bad news is that microscopic pieces of feces can be transferred by a dog
sitting briefly on a public sidewalk or left behind after a responsible dog owner has
picked up dog waste. To verify the cleanliness of Camp Bow Wow, I visited the site in
Coppell and discovered dog waste in a common area outside their facility that had been
there for several days. I have a video to confirm this discovery.
Now add to this picture 100s of preschool children every day walking across the same
shared parking area. It's just a matter of time before small particles of dog feces are
tracked inside 280 Sports, and eventually make their way into Emler Swim
School. A swimming pool is the perfect carrier for bacteria to travel from the feet to the
mouth.
For this reason we have expensive systems that monitor the chlorine levels every
second and inject more chlorine instantly if the levels drop. But, today we are
discovering that some bacteria in dog waste, like ecoli and cryptosporidium are chlorine
resistant.
So we've also invested in a UV system that irradiates microscopic bacteria that is
chlorine resistant. Unfortunately it takes up to 4 hours for every drop of water in the pool
to pass through this system. So dangerous contaminant can live in our pool for four
hours before we can guarantee that it's been eliminated.
This may sound frightening to the public, but we don't typically have to deal with bacteria
like ecoli and crypto... unless there is dog waste in the area.
Having so many dogs on our property, who must share our undersized parking lot puts
Emler Swim School in an impossible position to protect their 1200 children, toddlers, and
babies who swim every week at our Southlake pool.
Attached are some warnings about animal waste and recreational water from the Center
of Disease Control and Prevention website.
Respectfully submitted,
Jan Emler

Children
Accidentally swallowing contaminated recreational water is one way children can get cryptosporidiosis,
parasitic disease.
Children of all ages can develop parasitic diseases such as giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis from
swallowing contaminated water during swimming, playing, and other activities in contaminated
recreational water (e.g. pools, fountains, lakes, rivers and streams, etc.). Pets and other animals can be
potential source of parasites that can affect children.
Animals (Zoonotic)
Pets can carry parasites and pass parasites to people. Proper handwashing can greatly reduce risk.
A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be passed between animals and humans. Zoonotic diseases can be
caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi. Some of these diseases are very common.
People can acquire cryptosporidiosis if they accidentally swallow food or water that is contaminated by
stool from infected animals. Pets can carry and pass parasites to people.
Parasites
Water
Parasites are also a cause of waterborne disease in the United States. Both recreational water (water used
for swimming and other activities) and drinking water can become contaminated with parasites and cause
illness. Recreational water illnesses (RWIs) are diseases that are spread by swallowing, breathing, or
having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, or the ocean.
The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea caused by parasites, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia
intestinalis. Giardia intestinalis is also a common parasite found in drinking water. Both Cryptosporidium
and Giardia intestinalis are found in the fecal matter of an infected person or animal. These parasites can
be spread when someone swallows water that has been contaminated with fecal matter from an infected
person or animal.

SubJect: Opposition to Camp Bow Wow Case
Hello. My name Is Victoria Williams and I am the owner of the Spanish Schoolhouse Preschool located in the
same building as the proposed business Camp Bow Wow. I was not aware of the zoning proposal until today
and therefore missed the last meeting regarding this. I am strongly opposed to this business coming to the
building for several masons. Please see the Items of concern below.
1. The outdoor bathroom area for the dogs will be located approximately 20 feet from the playground where 90
children play every day. Therefore, there are health concems as well as a concern about smell that will
constantly be present. Parents do not want their children to smell dog waste while playing on the playground.
2. When a dog goes to the bathroom In the parking lot on the way in or out of the building, our students and
parents could easily step in it and bring it inside the school which could be extremely toxic and dangerous to
children who are playing on the floor (we start at age 2).
3. The capacity of 85 dogs means a lot of barking. Dog barking cannot be controlled. We have only one narrow
hallway between their business and ours so the barking- will be heard inside our school as well as on the
playground. Our young childr+enis nap but will be dispilked by the noise and educational facilities such as ours
need a quiet atmosphere In which the children can 'learn and focus.
I understand that in the last meeting It was stated that the dogs don't bark and there is never any waste left
outside or In the parking lot.. However, Jan Emler from Emler Swim vent to a Camp Bow Wow location currently
in operation and has a video of very loud barking as well as dog waste both outside and in the parking lot.
Please note that I strongly protest this for the safety and education of 90 children whose parents trust they are in
a clean, educational environment. 1 will attend the meeting Tuesday to repeat my concerns.
Thank you for your time reading this.
Sincerely,
wetudls Williams
